About Aries rising
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, a fire sign of initiative and courage. Aries rising people are often direct, active, and willing to take charge. You feel best when you have a meaningful challenge or a clear direction for your energy.
Mars rules Aries. It’s the planet of courage, physical energy, motivation, protection, and the ability to overcome obstacles. For an Aries ascendant, Mars rules your 1st house (you: your body, identity, and overall direction) and your 8th house (transformation, longevity, hidden matters, and deep spiritual work).

Red coral
Red coral is the primary gemstone for Mars, and the first gem I consider for an Aries ascendant. Wearing red coral strengthens Mars, your ruling planet. Good red coral can support:
- Courage and physical strength
- Motivation and initiative
- Clear direction and purposeful action
- The ability to overcome obstacles
How much it helps depends on where Mars sits in your chart, how strong it is, and how it relates to your other planets.
Aries rising tells us that Mars rules your whole chart, so a Mars gemstone often works well. But the main question is whether wearing red coral will support vitality, courage, purposeful action, or whether it could intensify heat, impatience, conflict, or sudden changes. Mars is a heating planet and also rules the Aries 8th house of change. A qualified Vedic Gemologist can help you determine if coral is the right match for you.

What to look for in Jyotish red coral
- Natural and untreated, with even color and a smooth, well polished surface
- Strong natural color. Deep oxblood red is the most prized, and a lighter tomato red is fine too.
- At least 3 to 4 carats, but quality matters more than size. A smaller fine coral is better than a larger dyed or damaged one.
- Usually cut as a smooth, domed cabochon. Barrel shapes are fine too, and often good value.
- Set open-backed. A bezel helps protect it, since coral is softer than ruby or sapphire.
- Dyed, reconstructed, filled, coated, cracked, or heavily pitted coral doesn’t work for Jyotish, and neither does coral with large white areas.
The right size, setting, and way to wear it are different for each person.

Pink & peach coral
Pink and peach coral are practical substitutes for red coral, sometimes called Mars uparatnas. (An uparatna is a substitute gem. It strengthens the same planet as the primary gem and carries the same astrological meanings, usually with a milder effect.)
They usually feel less heating and less concentrated than deep red coral. Most people choose them because they’re more affordable, and we offer them in larger sizes to make up for their milder strength.

Other gems for Aries
Ruby (for the Sun), yellow sapphire (for Jupiter), and pearl (for the Moon) are also important in many Aries charts. Whether strengthening their planets would help you depends on your complete birth chart: where each planet sits, and how active it is for you right now.

Ruby
The Sun rules your 5th house (intelligence, creativity, children, and good karmic potential).
Ruby can support confidence, leadership, vitality, creativity, and a clearer sense of purpose.

Yellow sapphire
Jupiter rules your 9th house (dharma, teachers, higher knowledge, and good fortune).
Yellow sapphire can support wisdom, optimism, education, spiritual understanding, and helpful guidance.

Pearl
The Moon rules your 4th house (emotional peace, home, mother, and inner security).
Pearl can support emotional steadiness, intuition, receptivity, and peace of mind. I only recommend red coral and pearl together after looking at your individual chart.
Gems to avoid: emerald, blue sapphire, diamond, and white sapphire are usually not good for Aries rising, unless your chart gives a specific reason to wear one.
Choosing a Jyotish gemstone
Jyotish gemstones should be natural, properly identified, and very fine quality. Treatment, transparency, color, clarity, size, and how the stone is set all matter.
Before you buy a gem or set it permanently, make sure its planet is a good one to strengthen in your chart.
Buying from us
- 100% Accuracy GuaranteeIf a gem you buy from us is certified by a reputable lab with an identification or treatment other than what we disclosed, we refund the sale as soon as it’s verified. (For astrological gems, the reputable labs in the U.S. are GIA, AGL, and Stone Group Labs.)
- Fair Price GuaranteeIf you find a gem of the same quality (color, clarity, cut, origin, lack of treatment, and weight) for a lower price per carat than you paid us, we’ll credit you the difference.
- Two-week returns on unset gemsReturn an unset gem within two weeks, for any reason, in the same condition, and we refund it minus a small restocking fee. To try a different gem instead, you have three weeks to exchange it, and we cover the processing fees. Red coral and pearl sales are final, because they’re porous and absorb the wearer’s natural body oils. Gems that have been set in jewelry are also final sale.
- 3-day memo to see a gem in person (U.S.)We send the gem insured, with a credit card authorization, so you can see it and test it at home with no obligation to buy. If you send it back, you pay only the shipping (FedEx, usually $60 to $90 each way). Call 800-559-5090 to arrange one.
Why the full chart matters
Your rising sign is the first place to start, but it doesn’t show us the whole picture. Where your planets are placed, how strong or weak they are, your current planetary periods, and your intentions for wearing a gemstone all impact which one you should wear.
In a full written gemstone consultation, I look at your birth chart, your actual planetary placements, your current periods, any intentions you share for wanting to wear a gemstone, and I recommend the best gem for you with that additional context.
Consultations are $108, and that’s credited back with the purchase of any gemstone over $500. I’ll need your exact birth time to load an accurate chart.
