About Saturn
Shani means that which moves “slowly slowly” (shanaiye shanaiye). Saturn moves slowly and steadily. It takes about two and a half years for Saturn to cross a zodiac sign.
Saturn is considered a malefic planet, but when it’s placed in a favorable sign and house, it can bestow great fame and wealth. In unfavorable conditions, it gives sorrow, poverty, loss, accidents, misery, and hurdles in life.
Saturn represents the highest qualities of humanity, even though many people fear its significations. It’s the planet of discipline, endurance, structure, responsibility, maturity, and karmic development. It rules Capricorn and Aquarius.
Blue sapphire
Blue sapphire is the primary gemstone for Saturn. Wearing a Saturn gemstone enhances its qualities, and it’s ideal for someone looking for cooling, focus, discipline, and structure in their life.
The main question is whether a blue sapphire will steady you or weigh on you. When Saturn is difficult in a chart, its gem can increase heaviness or pressure instead.
What to look for in a Jyotish blue sapphire
- Natural and unheated. Avoid heated blue sapphires of all types: the Garuda Purana states that heated blue sapphires are dangerous for the wearer.
- At least 2 carats. A 1.8 carat sapphire can still work if it’s ideal quality. 3 carats is plenty, and 4 carats is more than enough for most people.
- Transparent and as close to eye-flawless as possible, VS2 clarity or higher. Minor rutile silk is fine.
- A wide range of blues is acceptable. Light blue works well, especially with a brilliant cut that reflects a lot of light.
- Beautiful brilliant faceting, good symmetry, and no window through the center
- Very fine quality. Overly dark, gray, cloudy, heavily included, diffusion treated, glass filled, and heat treated stones don’t work for Jyotish.
How to wear blue sapphire
Blue sapphire is traditionally set in silver and worn on the middle finger of either hand, or as a pendant.
- As an engagement ring, it can be worn on the ring finger, though the traditional finger in astrology is the middle finger.
- Open behind the stone. Jyotish settings are open on the underside, so light and color pass through the gem and it lightly touches your skin. A pendant still works under your clothing.
- Bigger and darker isn’t always better. A smaller or lighter blue sapphire can provide support without feeling too heavy.
Blue spinel & amethyst
Blue spinel and amethyst are the main Saturn uparatnas. (An uparatna is a substitute gem. It strengthens the same planet and carries the same astrological meanings as the primary gem.)
Both are far more affordable than blue sapphire, and milder, so size matters more. Blue spinel works in the 2 to 3 carat range, and amethyst should be at least 8 to 20 carats for tangible Jyotish results.
