Red Coral Buying Guide

Red coral is the primary gemstone for Mars in Vedic Astrology (Jyotish).
Before buying red coral, itās important to understand what strengthening Mars would support in your birth chart. Marsās house rulership and placement matter, so a general description of its benefits isnāt enough to choose the gem. You can use our free gem report as a starting point.

Buy from a Vedic gemologist whenever possible
Not all gems work for astrology. A qualified Jyotish gemstone dealer will have assessed gems for suitability already.
Natural, undyed, and untreated
For Jyotish, choose natural coral that hasnāt been dyed or otherwise treated. Pale coral can be dyed red, and treatments such as filling, coating, or resin impregnation can change its appearance. Reconstructed coral and imitation materials should also be clearly identified.
The seller should disclose the coralās treatment status. Dye can sometimes collect in pits, cracks, or drill holes, but color alone wonāt prove that coral is untreated. A knowledgeable gemologist can evaluate it and advise when laboratory testing would be useful. Avoid experimenting with chemicals or other home tests that could damage the stone.
Color and surface quality
Look for a smooth, well-polished surface and attractive, even natural color. Deep oxblood red is especially sought after, though a lighter tomato red can also be suitable for Jyotish when the coral is untreated and in good condition.
Check the front, back, and sides for cracks, deep pits, or heavy blemishes. Small natural markings or subtle white striations on the underside can be acceptable. Large white patches, significant discoloration, and damage across the face of the stone deserve closer attention.
Coral is opaque, so youāre judging its color, surface, and overall condition. Transparency and the faceted cutting standards used for sapphires donāt apply.
Shape and size
Most coral for Vedic jewelry is cut as a cabochon, with a smooth, rounded top. Oval and pear shapes are common. Barrel shapes can also work well. Choose a shape you like, then have the jewelry made to fit it.
We generally recommend 3 to 4 carats or more for red coral, with the final size chosen for the individual. Quality is more important than size, so donāt trade a sound, untreated coral for a larger piece thatās dyed, cracked, or poorly finished.
Pink and peach coral
For Jyotish, pink and peach coral are alternatives for someone who would benefit from Mars but is sensitive to the intensity of a deeper red stone. We consider the wearerās birth chart and physiology when making that choice.
Choose pink or peach coral with the same attention to natural color, polish, and condition. A pale color alone doesnāt tell you whether itās untreated.

Setting and caring for your coral
A ring or pendant can work well. For Vedic jewelry, the back stays open so the underside can lightly touch the skin. Coral is softer than sapphire or ruby, and a bezel or partial bezel can help protect it from everyday knocks.
Keep coral away from perfume, harsh chemicals, and heat. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Wipe it with a soft cloth; if it needs more cleaning, briefly rinse it in warm, mildly soapy water. Donāt leave it soaking. Store it separately from harder gems.
