About Virgo rising
Virgo is the sixth sign of the zodiac, an earth sign of intelligence, organization, discernment, practicality, and attention to detail. What to look for in a Jyotish emerald
- Natural, transparent, and very fine quality
- Untreated, or only lightly oiled. Oiling is standard for emeralds and doesn’t change the stone, so a little is fine for Jyotish.
- A very rich green with subtle blue undertones. The more intense the color, the stronger the astrological effect.
- Extremely clean. Every emerald has inclusions, so wear only the rare, super clean, transparent ones for astrology.
- Usually above 2 carats, though a 1 carat stone that’s extremely clean with strong color can be very effective
- Cloudy, heavily fractured, dyed, glass filled, or heavily treated emeralds don’t work for Jyotish.
- Traditionally set in yellow gold. A pendant is the safest way to wear one; as a ring, the pinky (Mercury’s finger) or the ring finger.
- Set open-backed, so light passes through and the stone lightly touches your skin

Green tourmaline and peridot are the main Mercury uparatnas I use. (An uparatna is a substitute gem. It strengthens the same planet as the primary gem and carries the same astrological meanings, usually with a milder effect.)
